Ginger

Second only to salt as an Asian condiment, as a medicinal, ginger is even more remarkable.  Ginger is actually a rhizome, a large underground stem. It grows in the shape of a palm with fingers, called a hand of ginger.  Ginger has a peppery, pungent taste that warms and stimulates digestion, and boosts circulation, respiration, and nervous system function.  By increasing circulation, it helps effect a systemic cleansing through the skin, bowels, and kidneys. Ginger is probably most well know for being a effective remedy for motions sickness, nausea from chemotherapy and morning sickness.  Maybe not as well known but ginger is also an effective anti-inflammatory and it destroys many intestinal parasites.  It normalizes blood pressure and helps support the liver. It eases congestion in the throat and lungs, relieving symptoms of cold and flu.  There are no adverse side effects listed in the current pharmacopoeia.

Ginger gives a clean, fresh taste to a dish and is my favorite spice.

Lisa
